Breast cancer has now overtaken lung cancer as the world's
mostly commonly-diagnosed cancer, according to statistics released by the
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in December 2020. Five to
eight percent of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases are metastatic at
diagnosis. Intriguingly this number has not changed over the last decade even
with the widespread use of more sensitive systemic staging modalities like
PET-CT.
